Rather than a conventional group exhibition, Anatomy of a Presence brings together three site-specific installations by three major Brazilian artists: Henrique Oliveira, Lucia Koch, and Vivian Caccuri. Like an exquisite corpse, the artists’ distinct works enter into dialogue, ultimately coming together to form a single organism.
Spanning different generations, the three artists share an interest in the body and the organic, engaging the senses and space to explore how architecture, light, and sound shape our relationship to the environment. Monumental sculptures, organic forms, light installations, and sound works unfold throughout the museum, immersing visitors in a sensory environment where individual and collective experiences converge.
Their practices also evoke a distinctly Brazilian social and cultural landscape, shaped by the energy of celebration and carnival, but also by climate, the presence of the sea, light and nature, as well as by the city and the megacity, and the relentless expansion of the urban fabric. Their work can thus be situated within a broader history of installation art in Brazil, which emerged in the 1960s, notably under the influence of modernism, and placed particular emphasis on sensory experience and the active involvement of the body.
At a time when an increasingly virtual world is mediated by screens, the exhibition offers a counterpoint: an experience grounded in the senses, in which the body becomes our primary instrument for engaging with the world around us.
