Pablo Reinoso - Supernature
Polygone Riviera, Câgne-sur-mer, France
Curated by Jérôme Sans
19th June - 14th october 2019
With its swirling arabesques and steel benches, the work of Pablo Reinoso takes our environment into a new dimension. His sculptures seem to breathe, moving like living things and pursuing a trajectory beyond their physical boundaries. Blurring the frontiers between art and design, his hybrid works open up the eld of sculpture, which is no longer just something to be looked at, but something that allows us to look at the world. He draws from the “anonymous design” codes of street furniture, transcending them to create living, moving sculptures with a feeling of lightness. The artworks are dotted around the centre, creating an interplay of forms reminiscent of plant growth. Extravagant and spectacular, they light-heartedly extend the eld of possibility, challenging our preconceptions and inviting us to re ect upon the fragility of established order and how vital it is for humans to be in synch with the world they live in.
The source of the exhibition is one of the artworks in the permanent collection at Polygone Riviera: the Banc d’amarrage or “mooring bench”, whose slats stretch out in a surprising way. The works on display seem to extend this stretching movement and take possession of the place, forming a network of tendrils within the architectural structures of the shopping centre. As if born in dreams, one by one they invite us to reconsider the public bench as a space for encounters, interactions and conversations. Dotted around the paths, fountains and squares of the centre, Pablo Reinoso’s works are ideal places to pause for a while, poetically encouraging us to re ect upon the role of art in collective space.
Entitled “Supernature”, the exhibition also explores the idea of nature that re-emerges and spreads through urban areas exponentially, as if surrealistically challenging its own laws, overstepping the boundaries set by the modern world. The title echoes the original site of Polygone Riviera, which since it was created has paid special attention to the natural environment and ecosystems, preserving and laying out a new landscape next to the river Malvan. By using these spaces, Pablo Reinoso rethinks the porosity between the natural and urban environments and between the organic and the artificial, allowing his works to grow limitlessly, as if the plant world were reclaiming control in the face of order established by humans. “Supernature” suggests the sense of energy and exuberance that runs through Pablo Reinoso’s work. Where the contemporary world has always sought to format and tame nature, Reinoso’s work embraces the paradigm of the living world and current philosophy at a time when ecology has become one of society’s central issues.
