Showcasing one of the first international contemporary art exhibitions in Nur-Sultan, the capital city of Kazakhstan.
The word “Kazakh” appeared in the thirteenth century in a Turkish-Arab dictionary to signify the “free man”, the “wanderer” (nomad) or the “exiled”. The “Kazakh” meant a free individual who had left his people for freedom.
Exploring the free spirit of nomadism that is common to all these as those in other parts of the world, Racing the Galaxy deals with the dissolution of the old dichotomies between East and West, in an era of global communication and melding cultural influences, referencing the idea that artistic forms travel, mingle and enrich each other, from one continent to another. The exhibition convenes all artistic mediums to emphasize the impermanence of social, political, economic and aesthetic rules, reflecting on transitions and displacements, as an echo of the heterogeneous culture of Kazakhstan which is currently experiencing a period of total reinvention and unbridled creativity. In fact, it also highlights the talented emerging artists from a vibrant Kazakh art scene. Sharing the ambition to sensitize their audiences and to highlight the dissonances of a changing world, these artists are informed by their creative displacements and their mastery of new technologies. Covering topics such as globalization, multiculturalism, identity, gender, minorities, the quest for the future, and the appropriation of history, all these artists explore speculative narratives and aesthetic strategies to map the social and political issues currently being played out.
The eponym exhibition catalogue is the first survey in English of contemporary art practice in Kazakhstan and offers a new perspective on the debates engaging contemporary Kazakh and international culture. Racing the Galaxy affirms the extraordinary potential of Kazakhstan and Central Asia in general and celebrates dynamic adaptation alongside historical heritage.
