To mark its 60th birthday, diptyque celebrates this passion for other horizons, for art and for perfume with the exhibition Immobile Journeys – Le Grand Tour. In this show curated by Jérôme Sans, nine contemporary artists present their vision of the journey through their interpretations of diptyque’s iconic destinations. A journey marked by fragrance, from France to Japan, via Italy, Greece and Lebanon.
Immobile Journeys questions the extraordinary polysemy of “the journey” in an age of global nomadism and in the period following the world’s sudden descent into global immobility. In the spirit of Xavier de Maistre’s A Journey Around my Room (1794), which turned his enforced confinement into an experience conducive to daydreaming and introspection, the exhibition explores different forms of mental and aesthetic roaming – real, digital, mythical or imaginary. Leaving on one’s own, towards other horizons, has its antecedents in the Grand Tour, which, between the 17th and 19th centuries, was considered the ultimate education in arts and humanities for young European artists and writers in search of knowledge and adventure. Amplified by the emergence of digital technology and its ‘gift’ of ubiquity, the 21st century marks the advent of travel that is multilayered, virtual and simultaneous, experienced in several locations at once. From this moment on, the journey begins at our doorstep, at the frontiers of the mind. Immobile Journeys is an immersion into the worlds of nine artists hailing from the four corners of the globe. From road trips to the virtual journeys of the present day, from Lebanon to France, from Greece to Italy via Japan, this exhibition connects five iconic diptyque destinations in one dimension – the global world. As if part of an exquisite corpse linking the worlds of these artists, each work is a stationary journey, an oxymoron, a territory shifting – expanding – through space and time. Connecting the City of Light to the entire world, Immobile Journeys traces multiple pathways towards the unexpected, each encouraging the exploration of another reality, to renew our view of the world.
