La Biennale de Lyon est essentiellement présentée dans 5 lieux différents : La Sucrière, le Musée d'art contemporain, l'Institut d'art contemporain de Villeurbanne, le Rectangle et le Fort Saint-Jean. Elle expose des œuvres des années 70 (Andy Warhol, Gordon Matta-Clark, Yoko Ono, Terry Riley) et des créations contemporaines (Kader Attia, Martin Creed, Spencer Tunick). Ainsi, l'impact global est-il relativement large, tant spatialement que temporellement. Les œuvres exposées forment en effet une puissante collection d'expériences sensorielles et invitent les visiteurs à participer activement.
