Racing the galaxy présente l'une des premières expositions internationales d'art contemporain de Nur-Sultan, capitale du Kazakhstan. Le mot "Kazakh" apparaît au XIIIe siècle dans un dictionnaire turco-arabe pour désigner l'"homme libre", le "vagabond" (nomade) ou l'"exilé". Le "Kazakh" désignait un individu libre ayant quitté son peuple pour la liberté. 

Explorant l'esprit libre du nomadisme commun à tous ces artistes et à ceux d'autres régions du monde, Racing the Galaxy traite de la dissolution des anciennes dichotomies entre l'Est et l'Ouest, à une époque de communication globale et de fusion des influences culturelles, en référence à l'idée que les formes artistiques voyagent, se mélangent et s'enrichissent mutuellement d'un continent à l'autre. L'exposition convoque tous les médiums artistiques pour souligner l'impermanence des règles sociales, politiques, économiques et esthétiques, en réfléchissant aux transitions et aux déplacements, comme un écho à la culture hétérogène du Kazakhstan qui connaît actuellement une période de totale réinvention et de créativité débridée. De fait, elle met également en lumière les artistes émergents d'une scène artistique kazakhe talentueuse et en pleine effervescence. Partageant l'ambition de sensibiliser leur public et de mettre en lumière les dissonances d'un monde en mutation, ces artistes sont informés par leurs déplacements créatifs et leur maîtrise des nouvelles technologies. Abordant des sujets tels que la mondialisation, le multiculturalisme, l'identité, le genre, les minorités, la quête du futur et l'appropriation de l'histoire, tous ces artistes explorent des récits spéculatifs et des stratégies esthétiques pour cartographier les enjeux sociaux et politiques qui se jouent actuellement.

Le catalogue de l'exposition éponyme est la première enquête en anglais sur la pratique de l'art contemporain au Kazakhstan et offre une nouvelle perspective sur les débats engageant la culture contemporaine kazakhe et internationale. Racing the Galaxy affirme l'extraordinaire potentiel du Kazakhstan et de l'Asie centrale en général et célèbre l'adaptation dynamique aux côtés du patrimoine historique.
