L'un des festivals les plus ambitieux de son genre, Noor Riyadh est une célébration des arts et de la lumière s’étendant à travers la ville et transformant le paysage urbain en un musée à ciel ouvert. Ancrée dans la capitale cosmopolite et dynamique de l'Arabie saoudite, The Bright Side of the Desert Moon est une intervention dans une ville en plein essor, démontrant un monde en pleine mutation, tel un tourbillon dans le désert. Au milieu de ces transformations accélérées, le festival vise à écrire une histoire répartie sur plusieurs sites, comme une symphonie en différents mouvements qui prend place à la nuit tombée.
 
Située à Riyad, une métropole en plein essor plantée au milieu d'une vaste terre aride, l'exposition considère le désert comme un lieu de reconnexion où nos différences se dissipent. La lumière du désert nous aveugle autant qu'elle nous guide, nous trompe autant qu'elle nous émerveille. Ayant le pouvoir de nous éblouir visuellement tant que mentalement, l'intensité de la lumière dans le désert a une aura mystérieuse, presque miraculeuse, comme un mirage. Les rayons descendants se réfractent et semblent se retourner vers nous : ils révèlent que la lumière n'est pas statique mais se déplace dans l'atmosphère, comme si elle semait des graines ou arrosait les sols secs et uniformes. Particulièrement sujette à cette illusion d'optique, emblématique de ce qui peut être vu mais jamais atteint, Riyad se transforme en un jardin intangible où la lumière est conçue comme étant la force universelle qui construit notre monde contemporain et nos relations interpersonnelles.
 
Approchée comme à la fois vitalement naturelle et de plus en plus artificielle, depuis les premières flammes qui ont permis à l'humanité de se sédentariser et de se développer, jusqu'à l'éclat des écrans technologiques d'aujourd'hui, la lumière guide l'histoire de l'humanité. Tenu entre les mains de cette torche enchanteresse, le monde est devenu expansif, ininterrompu, infini. Si le grand câble venait à être débranché, privant l'humanité de cette énergie rayonnante et aveuglante, le cours de nos vies et le monde tel que nous le connaissons viendraient à immédiatement s’arrêter, inconcevablement perturbés. Située au cœur même de la structure de la société, la lumière est le cordon ombilical de notre monde, qu'il soit économique, politique, sociologique ou culturel.
 
Métaphore puissante de notre monde contemporain, le désert est la figure des méta-villes d'aujourd'hui dans lesquelles nous sommes facilement submergés par l'information. Dans ce monde extrêmement interconnecté, les individus n'ont paradoxalement jamais été aussi déconnectés. L'homme se retrouve isolé, effacé face à la multitude, comme restreint et lié à son propre grain de sable. L'anonymat au coeur de la foule est paradoxalement associé à une célébrité accessible, même si fugace - un quart d'heure de célébrité Warholienne rendu possible grâce aux réseaux sociaux. L'exposition détourne la vision du désert comme une force décontextualisante qui pousse à repenser nos relations et à reconsidérer l'anonymat comme un moyen de se reconnecter.
 
S'appuyant sur le progrès technologique et prêtant attention à l'histoire de la perception de la lumière par l'humanité, The Bright Side of the Desert Moon vise ainsi à canaliser la diversité qui compose notre monde dans une expérience partagée à travers les œuvres d'art. Ce manifeste poétique va à l'encontre de nos tendances individualistes et célèbre la lumière commune qui nous réchauffe, nous réconforte et nous relie tous.
